The federal "No Child Left Behind Act" establishes the goal that each child will be able to read on grade level or higher by the end of third grade and will continue reading on or above grade level throughout his or her school career. Many children who are not reading by third grade will probably experience academic difficulties for the rest of their school experiences.
Teachers play a critical role in the reading success of children. As teachers of reading, academy participants need to know best instructional practices to help children learn to communicate their ideas, understand the relationship between letters and sounds, and develop their listening comprehension. The instruction provided in the K-3 Reading Academy will build foundations for Florida's students to become successful readers.
The K-3 Reading Academies focus on providing early reading instruction effective for all K-3 students, particularly those who are having difficulty learning to read. Designed to be a practical and participatory learning experience for educators, K-3 academies offer teachers the opportunity to use both student and teacher editions of reading programs to apply what they learn. Other materials include presenter slides with notes and handouts, journal articles, lessons, and further references. We hope the academy content, video segments, and activities help guide participants in planning effective instruction for their students.
